The Ipod Nano Case: Another Layer Of Cool

The iPod nano took a great little idea and made it even smaller, trimming 62% off the size of the original iPod. But something that small, rather like a preemie baby, need extra loving care if it is to survive n the big, bad world. And Apple did not disappoint. The iPod nano case came to the rescue.

When the first iPod nano case, or iPod “sock,” because of the heavy cloth from which it was constructed, appeared, its purpose was to save the Mighty Mite’s surface from abrasions and scratches. But the presence of the fragile display screen on the iPod nano meant that the iPod nano case would eventually evolve into something more substantial. iPod users are usually people with active lifestyles, and their nanos needed extra protection.

The IPod Sock

But the iPod has built much of its market on its “cool” factor, and any IPod nano case which did not continue the cool tradition was not likely to find a following. The iPod nano case became a customizer’s dream, with a wide selection of designs, colors, and patterns; each iPod nano user can choose between a ready-to-go case or have the fun of combining the features to make a case which perfectly expresses his or her personality.

While the iPod nano sock is still available, and in a desinger collection of colors, Apple enhanced their iPod nano protection offerings with iPod nano cases in all-black Italian leather, embossed with the Apple logo. The difficulty with this initial IPod nano case was that it did not allow access to either the control wheel or the screen, essentially making it useless when the iPod nano was in operation.

Apple then introduced an armband iPod nano case, which allowed screen and control wheel access and had Velcro backing to sure it to the user’s arm. Silicon films were next, into which the iPod nanos would go rater like a hand into a latex glove. The silicon added scratch resistance without bulk, with screen and control wheel access.

Nano Cases Today

The current selection of iPod nano cases includes those in fabric, leather, silicon, acrylic and aluminum. While all materials are great for keeping the surface of the nano scratch-free, the acrylic and aluminum ones also protect it from moisture or the trauma of the occasional fall. No more restricting your nano use to sunny days and leaving it home when you head for the pool or the beach!

Even better, many of the latest iPod nano cases have built in clear film to cover the nano’s screen area, protecting it from dirt, debris, and smudging. For those that don’t, individual, removable screen protectors are available.
